Backing pads as the carrier for abrasives

A backing pad is the carrier between machine and abrasive: the plate the sanding disc, the fibre disc or the polishing medium is fixed to. It decides how pressure is spread across the surface, and with that how flat or how compliant the result comes out.

Hardness is the first choice. A hard pad keeps flat parts flat and cuts through when taking off paint or levelling weld seams. A soft pad follows curves and rounded transitions, stops you cutting through on the edges, and is the choice for polishing, where any difference in pressure shows up straight away in the gloss.

Sizing comes next. Diameters of 125 and 150 mm cover most random orbital sanding, with smaller pads from around 50 mm for detail work and larger ones past 200 mm for flat work at size. The mount matters more still. Thread, spindle size and the pattern of the extraction holes all have to suit the machine, because a pad with a different hole pattern closes off the extraction. Bosch, Metabo, Festool, Norton, 3M, PFERD, Fein, Makita, Milwaukee, HiKOKI and DeWalt supply pads for their own machines. The matching machine guard is listed separately.
